Can Teachers See Your Turnitin Draft Coach Checks? What the Documentation Says

Your Draft Coach similarity checks are private to you. University documentation on Draft Coach states that the reports generated through it do not feed back into Turnitin — your instructor does not see them, and they do not affect the final Similarity Report on your submitted assignment. The alternative way to check beforehand — submitting to an assignment that allows resubmissions — is not private: each version you upload is a real submission your instructor can see. So the privacy answer depends on which path you use.

Turnitin's own help center describes the starting point for students:

"As a student, you cannot self-check a paper within Turnitin without uploading it to an official assignment created by your instructor, unless your institution has enabled Turnitin Draft Coach. If Draft Coach is not available to you, your ability to check your work beforehand depends entirely on your instructor's assignment settings."

That leaves students with two practical paths:

1. Draft Coach — if your institution enables it, you run similarity (plus citation and grammar) checks inside Word or Google Docs before anything is submitted.
2. Assignment resubmissions — if your instructor's assignment allows resubmissions, you upload a draft, read the report, upload a revised version, and so on.

The visibility of each path is different, and that is what this article is about.

The key sentence comes from university staff documentation for Draft Coach (Reading's TEL pages, mirrored by several university FAQs):

"You cannot see Similarity Reports or checks generated by Draft Coach: These do not feed back into Turnitin."

"Draft Coach does not submit to Turnitin's repository: Running reports via Draft Coach will not affect the student's final Turnitin Similarity Report once they submit their assignment."

University FAQs say the same thing more plainly: the checks run inside the document, and "only the student sees the results."

Three consequences follow, all confirmed by the documentation:

• Your instructor does not see your Draft Coach checks — there is no log of your pre-submission similarity checks in the instructor's view.
• Draft Coach does not submit your document to Turnitin's repository — your pre-submission checks do not create a database entry that could later match your final submission.
• Your final report is unaffected — when you submit the assignment for real, the Similarity Report is generated fresh from that submission.

Note the boundary: Draft Coach is a formative tool. It is for practicing and improving before the final submission. It does not replace the report your instructor sees on the submitted assignment.

If Draft Coach is not available, the only self-check is through an assignment that allows resubmissions. The official help center explains the mechanics:

"If Draft Coach is not available, you can only check your Similarity score by submitting your draft to an assignment that allows resubmissions. If enabled, any new upload will overwrite your previous draft."

The report generation rules depend on the assignment version your instructor uses:

• Standard (Classic) assignments: the first 3 attempts generate a Similarity Report immediately; from the 4th attempt on, you must wait 24 hours for the next report.
• Standard assignments: you can resubmit up to 3 times within a 24-hour period; beyond that, you must wait until the next calendar day.

If resubmissions are disabled, the help center is direct about it:

"If your instructor has disabled resubmissions, your first attempt is final, and you will not be able to check your paper beforehand. If you wish to check a paper beforehand, you will need to contact your instructor directly to ask if they are willing to set up a temporary, separate practice assignment for this purpose."

The visibility difference from Draft Coach: every draft you upload through the resubmission path is a submission stored in the assignment. University FAQs note that each new upload overwrites the previous one, and the assignment keeps submission records. Your instructor can see that submissions happened, and can open the final version — and the final version is what generates the report they evaluate.

Putting both paths together, the instructor's view has three fixed things:

• The final submitted version — the one you submit for grading, and the Similarity Report that comes with it. This is the report they evaluate.
• The submission record — how many times you submitted, and when, if the assignment allows resubmissions. Draft Coach activity is not part of this record.
• Nothing from Draft Coach — no similarity checks, no citation checks, no grammar attempts appear in their view.

One common misunderstanding worth correcting: if you checked your paper with Draft Coach and it was clean, but the final submission still shows matches, that is normal — the final report is generated from the submitted assignment against the full database, independent of your Draft Coach checks. If you checked via resubmissions, the final report reflects the last version you uploaded; earlier versions were overwritten, not accumulated.

Some students have neither Draft Coach nor a resubmission-enabled assignment. The official answer for that situation is also the most practical one: contact your instructor directly. The help center explicitly suggests asking if they are willing to set up a temporary, separate practice assignment, so you can check your work before the real submission. That is a normal request, not a special exception — several universities document it as a standard option for students who want to check beforehand.

Your ability to check a paper before submitting, and who sees that check, depends on the path:

• Draft Coach: private, does not feed back into Turnitin, does not affect your final report.
• Assignment resubmissions: real submissions with rules (first 3 immediate, then 24-hour wait; Standard has a daily limit), and the versions you upload are visible to your instructor.
• Neither available: ask your instructor to set up a temporary practice assignment.

Checking your work before submitting is a legitimate, documented workflow. The private nature of Draft Coach is a privacy property of the tool, not a shortcut — the report your instructor evaluates is always the one generated from your real submission.
