Can Students See Their Turnitin AI Score? Student vs Instructor Views

No. Students cannot open the Turnitin AI Writing indicator or report from their own student view. Turnitin says that "only instructors and administrators are able to see the indicator" and that the indicator and report "are not visible to students." The same FAQ documents one route across that permission boundary: an instructor can download the AI report as a PDF and share it with the student.

That does not mean every percentage in a student account is hidden. Turnitin's student access guide says a student may find a percentage under the Similarity column and select it to open the Similarity Report. That is a different report. Seeing a Similarity Score does not reveal, replace, or rule out the instructor-side AI result.

If an AI result is being used to question your work, ask for the full AI Writing Report PDF, not only a screenshot of a percentage.

The table below applies to Turnitin's website and Standard (Classic) assignment settings. An LMS may put the controls in different places, but Turnitin's access rule for the AI indicator is the same. The important split is between access to the Similarity Report and access to the AI Writing Report.

Student access to a Similarity Report is not student access to an AI Writing Report. Do not treat them as the same permission.

Two separate choices affect what appears in the student's Similarity column. One choice decides whether students may view the report. Another decides when the report is generated. Turnitin documents several visible outcomes:

• A paper icon with a line through it means the instructor turned off student access to the Similarity Report.
• A dash under the Similarity column means the report is still being generated.
• With the "generate reports on due date" option, students receive no Similarity Report before the assignment deadline.
• With immediate reports and resubmission enabled, a fourth or later submission may take 24 hours to generate a new Similarity Report.

None of those states tells you whether the instructor has an AI result. They describe the Similarity Report. If the concern raised with you is AI writing, the relevant artifact is still the separate AI Writing Report PDF.

A screenshot of "32%" does not identify the report, its denominator, its state, or the passages behind it. The documented sharing route is the PDF. A short, neutral request is enough:

Could you please send me the full AI Writing Report PDF that was used to review my submission, rather than only the percentage? If there is no AI Writing Report, could you confirm whether the number shown was the Similarity Score and when that report was generated?

That request settles three questions without arguing about the result:

• Which report was used? The AI Writing Report and Similarity Report answer different questions.
• Was there a complete report? A processing or eligibility state is not the same thing as a numerical result.
• Which copy should be preserved? Keep the submitted file and the report used in the decision unchanged while any review is open.

Do not ask for a newly generated report as a substitute for the original. A new report is a new artifact. The useful copy is the one that was actually used, before anyone reran the file or made a replacement screenshot.

Use the labels on the page, not its color. Turnitin's AI report guide names two sections, Overall percentage detected as AI and Submission Breakdown. A Similarity Report instead presents matched passages and source details. If the PDF contains only a source list and text matches, ask whether a separate AI Writing Report exists.

• Read the report title and indicator state before the number. A percentage, an asterisk, a loading state, and a processing or file error do not mean the same thing.

• Keep AI findings separate from source matches. The AI Writing Report and Similarity Report comparison shows why the two percentages cannot be added, averaged, or used to validate each other.
• Retain the original file and PDF. Make any permitted revisions in a copy so the evidence used in the review does not change underneath you.

Can a student turn on the AI Writing Report in account settings? No. Turnitin assigns access to instructors and administrators, and an administrator can enable or disable the feature from the admin settings page. There is no student-side switch that exposes the AI indicator.

If I can see a percentage in Turnitin, is it my AI score? Not if you reached it through the Similarity column in the student view. Turnitin's student guide identifies that number as the Similarity Score, while its AI FAQ says the AI indicator is not visible to students.

Can my instructor share the AI result with me? Yes. Turnitin explicitly says instructors can download the AI report as a PDF and share it with students. Ask for that PDF rather than asking only for "the score."

What about the Turnitin Clarity Writing Report? A student may be allowed to view that report, but it is a different artifact. What if my instructor says there is a flag but no PDF is available? Ask whether an AI Writing Report was generated, whether the feature was enabled when the file was submitted, and whether the number being discussed is actually the Similarity Score. Do not fill those gaps with a score from a different detector.
