Turnitin Login for Students: Can You See Your Own AI Score?
If you are a student trying to log in to Turnitin to check your own AI score, you will not find it. Turnitin's AI writing detection indicator is not visible to students. Only instructors and administrators can see it. There is a way for students to receive the information, but it depends on the instructor. Here is what the documentation says.

Students Cannot See the AI Indicator
Turnitin's documentation is direct about who can view the AI writing detection results. The first relevant statement is:
"Please note, only instructors and administrators are able to see the indicator."
The documentation restates this restriction:
"The AI writing detection indicator and report are not visible to students."
A student who logs in to Turnitin will not see an AI percentage, an AI indicator, or an AI report for their own submission. The indicator exists in the system, but it is restricted to instructor and administrator accounts. This is by design, not a settings error or a missing permission that can be toggled on.
If your instructor has told you that your paper was flagged for AI, and you want to see the exact score, you cannot simply log in and look it up. How to check your work before you submit it to Turnitin covers what you can do on your own side instead. The score is on the instructor's side of the system.
The Licensing Requirement
Not every institution that uses Turnitin has access to AI writing detection at all. The feature requires a specific license. The documentation states:
"AI writing detection is only available to customers that license Turnitin Originality."
If your institution licenses Turnitin Similarity, Turnitin Feedback Studio (TFS), or Originality Check without the Turnitin Originality license, AI writing detection may not be part of the subscription. Turnitin Originality vs Feedback Studio vs iThenticate lays out which product carries the detector. For iThenticate users, the documentation adds:
"iThenticate 2.0 customers can get access to this feature if they license AI writing capabilities as an add-on."
For institutions on other plans, the documentation says:
"If you are a Turnitin Similarity, Turnitin Feedback Studio (TFS) or Originality Check customer, please speak to your Turnitin account manager regarding access to AI writing detection."
This means that even your instructor may not have the AI indicator visible if the institution has not licensed Turnitin Originality or the AI writing add-on. The feature is not universal across all Turnitin subscriptions, which is the real answer behind do colleges use AI detectors.
What to Expect in the Report
If your instructor shares the AI report PDF with you, it will contain the overall AI writing score for your document. The score is a percentage that represents the proportion of text the model classifies as AI-generated.
The score and the Similarity score are separate numbers. Turnitin's documentation states: "The Similarity score and the AI writing detection percentage are completely independent and do not influence each other." A high Similarity score does not mean a high AI score, and vice versa. The two are computed by different processes, set side by side in Turnitin AI writing report vs Similarity report.
For scores below 20%, Turnitin displays an asterisk instead of a numeric percentage. The documentation states: "To avoid potential incidence of false positives, no score or highlights are attributed for AI detection scores in the 1% to 19% range. When AI is detected below the 20% threshold in the report, it is now indicated with an asterisk (%) and no percentage is attributed." If you see an asterisk in the report, it means the model detected some AI content but below the 20% reporting threshold. [What the asterisk (%) means on a Turnitin AI score](/blog/what-does-the-asterisk-mean-on-turnitin-ai-score) goes through what does and does not follow from that.
What This Means for You
If you are a student looking for your Turnitin AI score, here is the summary:
- You cannot see your own AI indicator. Only instructors and administrators can view the AI writing detection indicator and report.
- Ask your instructor for the PDF. The PDF download feature lets instructors download and share the AI report with you.
- Your institution may not have the feature. AI writing detection requires a Turnitin Originality license or the AI writing add-on for iThenticate 2.0.
- AI score and Similarity score are independent. One does not influence the other.
- Low scores show as an asterisk. Scores in the 1-19% range display as *% with no numeric percentage.
Eligible passages can be re-run at no charge.
