SafeAssign vs Turnitin AI Detection: What Each One Actually Checks
Students often assume that if their paper passes SafeAssign, it will also pass Turnitin's AI check. The two tools run completely different analyses on completely different signals. Understanding the difference explains why a paper can clear one and fail the other.

The Short Answer
SafeAssign and Turnitin AI detection answer different questions. SafeAssign asks: "Does this text match something already in a database?" It compares your submission against academic papers, websites, and institutional repositories, then reports a percentage of matching text. Turnitin's AI writing detection asks: "Does this text look like it was written by a machine?" It analyzes word probability patterns in prose sentences and reports a percentage of likely AI-generated content. A paper can pass SafeAssign with zero matches and still get a high AI score, because the AI detector is not looking for copied text. It is looking for statistical patterns in how the words are chosen. The two scores have nothing to do with each other.
What SafeAssign Actually Does
SafeAssign is a plagiarism detection tool. It works by comparing submitted text against its database of source material, which includes academic publications, internet content, and a reference database of papers submitted by participating institutions. The output is an Originality Report that shows matching text and its sources, with a percentage score indicating how much of the submission matches existing content. The key point is that SafeAssign is entirely about matching. It asks whether your words appear somewhere else. It does not analyze how you wrote them, whether the writing style resembles machine-generated text, or whether the word choices follow patterns associated with AI. If you write every word yourself but your phrasing happens to match a published source, SafeAssign flags it. If you use AI to generate entirely original text that does not match anything in the database, SafeAssign sees nothing wrong.
What Turnitin AI Detection Does
Turnitin's AI writing detection operates on a completely different principle. Turnitin's own FAQ describes the process this way:
"When a paper is submitted to Turnitin, sentences from the submission are extracted and segmented into overlapping sections for prediction analysis. Each segment is classified by the AI detection model and given a value between 0 and 1, denoting the probability of the text being likely human or AI-generated. Each qualifying sentence within these segments inherits the segment's score. Since segments overlap, some sentences may have multiple scores, which are then pooled into a single score. These sentence scores are further aggregated and used to compute the overall document AI writing score."
The detector is not checking for matches. It is classifying text segments by the probability that they were machine-generated, based on statistical patterns the model learned during training. This is why Turnitin's FAQ explicitly states that "The Similarity score and the AI writing detection percentage are completely independent and do not influence each other." The same independence applies to any plagiarism tool: SafeAssign's matching percentage and Turnitin's AI score measure different things on different axes. Inside Turnitin the same split runs between the AI Writing Report and the Similarity Report.
Why Passing One Does Not Mean Passing the Other
The confusion usually starts when a student runs their paper through SafeAssign, gets a low similarity percentage, and assumes the paper is safe. It is safe from a plagiarism accusation. It is not necessarily safe from an AI detection accusation. Consider two scenarios. In the first, a student writes every word themselves but paraphrases closely from a source. SafeAssign may flag a high match percentage because the wording overlaps, even though no AI was involved. Turnitin's AI detector would likely give a low AI score because the writing pattern is human. In the second scenario, a student uses an AI tool to generate original text that does not match any existing source. SafeAssign returns zero matches because the text is new. Turnitin's AI detector may flag it as highly likely AI-generated because the word probability patterns match what the model learned to associate with machine writing. The two tools are blind to each other's concerns. SafeAssign cannot tell you anything about AI. Turnitin's AI detector cannot tell you anything about plagiarism. Who Sees What
There is also an access difference worth knowing. Turnitin's FAQ states that "only instructors and administrators are able to see the indicator" for AI writing detection. Students cannot see their own AI score unless the instructor chooses to share the PDF version of the report. SafeAssign, by contrast, can be configured to let students see their own Originality Reports depending on how the institution sets it up. This means that a student might see a clean SafeAssign report and feel confident, while never seeing the Turnitin AI score that their instructor can see. The fact that one tool shows you a number does not mean the other tool is showing the same thing, or that the same person can see both. What your instructor is told to do when your AI percentage is high describes the side of that gap you cannot see.
What This Means for You
