超出字数 10% 行不行？写少了会不会扣分

你可能听说过"上下 10% 都没事"。在某些学校的某些作业里，确实如此。但这不是通则。有的学校给 10% 余量，有的只给 5%，有的超一个词就扣分。还有的不扣分，但超出的部分老师直接不看。写少了也一样：有的不罚，有的也罚。

唯一靠谱的答案写在你的作业说明（assignment brief）里，下面引用的好几个来源自己也是这么说的。

10% 这个数字确实出现在大学的官方指导里，在下面这几处，它都带着限定词。University of Westminster（威斯敏斯特大学）图书馆的 Referencing FAQ 是这么写的：

Check your assignment guidance to see whether there is an allowance for exceeding the stated word count. An allowance of up to 10% is quite common.（查一下你的作业说明，看是否允许超出规定字数。10% 以内的宽限比较常见。）

Westminster 说的是"up to 10%"，还用了"quite common"，不是保证。Torrens University Australia（托伦斯大学）的 Academic Skills FAQ 走得更远：上下 10% 都算，写少了也罚。

The word count limit generally allows for a 10% (+/-) margin. This means that if you have to write a 1,000-word report, you need to write between 900 words and 1,100 words.（字数限制通常允许 10% 的上下浮动。也就是说，如果要求写一篇 1,000 词的报告，你需要在 900 到 1,100 词之间。）

Avondale University（阿冯代尔大学）图书馆的指南也提到"a latitude of 10% on either side"，但前面加了"usually"。所以即便出现了 10%，也不是无条件的。

不是所有学校都给 10%。有的给 5%，有的从超出的第一个词就扣分，扣法也各不相同。

• University of Edinburgh，School of Social and Political Science（爱丁堡大学社会与政治科学学院，简称 SPS）——适用于 SPS 所有 coursework（课程作业），2024/25 学年起。超字数扣 5 分，原文说"regardless of how many words over the limit the work is (whether it is by 1 word or by 500!)"（不管超了多少词，超 1 个还是超 500 个，都扣）。Edinburgh 其他学院有自己的规定，MSc dissertation（硕士论文）另算。
• University of Auckland, Faculty of Law（奥克兰大学法学院）——LLB 书面作业。超出限制 5% 以内不罚，超过 5% 后每超 10%（或不足 10% 的部分）扣 5 分。学院建议"sticking closely to the given limit rather than using all the words up to the 5% leeway"（尽量贴近规定字数，而不是把 5% 的宽限用满）。同一所大学的教育与社会工作学院给的是 10%，不同学院，不同数字。
• SOAS University of London（伦敦大学亚非学院）——授课型学生的 coursework，包括 essays、reports 和 dissertations。超出 10% 以上至 20%：扣 10 个百分点；20% 以上至 30%：扣 15 个百分点；超出 30%："The work will be assigned a grade of 0."（作业评为 0 分。）

三所学校，三种做法。余量多少取决于学校、学院和作业类型。你在 Edinburgh 但不在 SPS，SPS 的扣 5 分不一定适用你，去查你自己学院的规定。Auckland 法学院的 5% 跟教育学院的 10% 也不是一回事。

有些学校不谈扣分，老师直接停笔不读。St George's, University of London（伦敦圣乔治学院）对全部学位课程做了这个规定（2023 年 6 月批准）：

Students who exceed the prescribed word limit will have their work marked but markers will stop marking when the word count exceeds the maximum word count set for that assignment.（超出规定字数的学生，作业仍会被批改，但当字数超过该作业设定的上限时，老师停止批改。）

超出部分不读、不给分、不给反馈。曼彻斯特大学的 Alliance Manchester Business School（AMBS）对研究生 coursework 和 dissertation 用的是带余量的版本：

Rather than applying a penalty to a piece of written coursework or dissertation that exceeds the word-limit, markers will use a "guillotine" system. Under this system, markers are not required to consider anything written after the word limit has been passed by more than 10%. For example, if the question requires a 2,000-word answer, anything you write after the 2,200-word mark has been passed may be ignored.（对于超出字数限制的课程作业或论文，老师不扣分，而是用"断头台"机制：超出限制 10% 以后的内容，老师不需要看。比如题目要求 2,000 词，那 2,200 词之后写的任何东西都可能被忽略。）

AMBS 给你 10% 余量才"断头"，St George's 在 100% 处就停。就算有余量，多写的字也可能完全不算分，白写，不止丢分这么简单。

写少了是另一个问题，同样取决于你在哪儿。

• 不罚的：
• Edinburgh SPS："You will not be penalised for submitting work below the word count limit."（字数不够不会被处罚。）
• St George's："Assignments which are below the word limit set for an assignment will not attract a specific penalty."（低于字数限制的作业不会有专门处罚。）
• AMBS："You will not be penalised for answers that are shorter than the limit"（字数不够不会被处罚。）
• Auckland 法学院："There is no penalty applied for an assessment falling under the word limit."（字数低于限制不会被处罚。）
• 可能罚的：
• Torrens University Australia：写少于 10% 下限也罚（见上文）。
• Maynooth University, School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures（爱尔兰国立梅努斯大学现代语言、文学与文化学院，2023-24 学院手册）："In general, in excess of 10% under or over word count can incur a penalty; however, this may vary, and you should carefully check the assignment brief for guidance."（一般来说，超出字数限制上下 10% 可能会被处罚；但具体情况可能不同，请仔细查看作业说明。）

不罚的学校也提醒：偏短的作业本身就拿不到高分。Edinburgh SPS 说"shorter essays are unlikely to achieve the required depth and that this will be reflected in your mark"（较短的论文不太可能达到要求的深度，这会反映在你的分数上）。St George's 说明显偏短的作业"normally self-penalising"（通常会自然反映在分数上）。没有正式处罚，写太少照样丢分。

根据这些来源，建议是：按作业说明里写的上限写，不要把宽限当目标。如实申报字数。说明里没提宽限，就去问。

• 查你的作业说明，找到字数限制和有没有宽限。没提宽限就去问导师或 learning facilitator。
• 搞清楚什么算字数：不同工具数出来不一样。看各工具字数为什么不一样和参考文献算不算字数。
• 如实填写字数。Edinburgh 要求在 coversheet（封面页）上写实际字数；SOAS 把"significant inaccuracies in declared word counts"（申报字数严重不准确）当作 Academic Misconduct Policy 下的违规处理；St George's 保留对漏报或虚报字数启动纪律程序的权利。
• 已经超了的话，看超了怎么删。
