The irony is sharp. According to Turnitin's own documentation, the text most likely to be falsely flagged as AI-generated is text with low structural variation, repetition, and paraphrasing without new ideas. In other words, the writing style students adopt to "look less like AI" is the same style the detector says it struggles with. Writing worse does not help you avoid detection. It makes your writing fit the profile of what gets falsely flagged.
What Turnitin says about false positives
Turnitin's AI writing detection FAQ page is unusually candid about where the tool produces false positives. The documentation states: "Sometimes false positives (incorrectly flagging human-written text as AI-generated), can include content without a lot of structural variation, text that literally repeats itself, or text that has been paraphrased without developing new ideas." The next sentence adds: "If our indicator shows a higher amount of AI writing in such text, we advise you to take that into consideration when looking at the percentage indicated." (source)
Read those two sentences together and the problem becomes clear. The features that trigger false positives are the same features students introduce when they deliberately simplify their writing. Less structural variation? That is what happens when you flatten your sentence patterns. Text that repeats itself? That is what happens when you avoid varied phrasing. Paraphrasing without developing new ideas? That is what happens when you strip out analysis to keep things simple.
The strategy is self-defeating. Students who write worse to avoid AI flags are moving their writing closer to the false-positive profile, not away from it.
The model is not what students think
A common assumption among students is that AI detectors flag "complex" or "polished" writing. The logic goes: if AI writes in a sophisticated way, then writing in a less sophisticated way should avoid detection. This assumption does not hold up against what Turnitin actually says about its model.
Turnitin's FAQ states: "Our model is not explicitly programmed to evaluate specific signals such as 'burstiness,' 'perplexity,' or other individual metrics sometimes referenced in public discussions." The next sentence explains: "Instead, it learns statistical patterns from our training data." (source)
This is important, but it does not mean the model ignores word probability. On the same page, Turnitin states: "Our classifiers are trained to detect these differences in word probability and are adept at the particular word probability sequences of human writers." (source)
Put these two statements together and the picture changes. The model is not running a simple "complex words equal AI" check. It learns statistical patterns from training data and is specifically trained on word probability differences. Deliberately simplifying your vocabulary or flattening your sentence structure does not outsmart pattern recognition. It changes the patterns in your writing, and not necessarily in a direction that helps you.
The relationship between writing quality and AI scores is more complex than "simple equals human, complex equals AI." Students who try to game this relationship by writing worse are working from a model of detection that the documentation does not support.
The documentation already protects students
Here is something we rarely see mentioned in these discussions: Turnitin's own documentation says the AI score should not be treated as a verdict. Students who panic about AI flags may not realize that the vendor itself counsels caution.
The AI Writing Report guide states: "Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text), so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student." The next sentence continues: "It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether academic misconduct has occurred." A separate guide for educators reinforces this framing: "It is not meant to provide definitive answers in isolation. More important than any tool is the educator who sees the score and makes decisions balancing this information with their personal knowledge of their students, their work, and institutional policy." The next sentence adds: "When educators look at the AI writing score and utilize it as a single data point rather than a definitive response, then it is being used as intended." (source)
The score is one input, not a verdict. Students do not need to degrade their writing to protect themselves from a tool that the vendor says should never be the sole basis for adverse actions in the first place.
The real cost of writing worse
The damage from this strategy extends beyond AI scores. When students deliberately simplify their writing, they hurt their grades. Essays that lack structural variation, analysis, and varied vocabulary are weaker essays. Professors grade on quality, not on AI scores, and a deliberately degraded essay will read as a weaker piece of work to any attentive reader.
The damage compounds over time. Writing is a skill that develops through practice. When students train themselves to write worse, they are practicing the wrong skills. They become accustomed to flattening their prose, avoiding complexity, and producing text that repeats itself without developing ideas. These habits carry into future assignments, job applications, and professional communication.
