The question nobody can answer with a list

Search for "free AI humanizer" and you will find dozens of tools claiming to make AI text undetectable. The problem is that nobody can tell you which ones Turnitin actually catches, because Turnitin does not say. The official FAQ puts it plainly:

"Our AI writing detector has been trained and tested to detect leading paraphraser and bypasser tools. However, to safeguard the integrity of our solution and its effectiveness in maintaining academic honesty, we're unable to disclose the names of these tools."

The next sentence from the same FAQ:

"Our product teams are constantly working to expand our detection capabilities."

So the list is not just hidden. It is also moving. A tool that slips past today might not tomorrow, and you have no way to know which category your tool falls into without submitting and finding out.

What Turnitin does say it detects

Although the tool list is confidential, Turnitin has stated that it can detect text modified by paraphraser and bypasser tools. From the FAQ:

"Furthermore, it can also identify instances where AI-generated text may have been modified by AI paraphraser or bypasser (also called humanizers) tools to evade detection."

There is a language limit on this capability:

"Our AI paraphraser & bypasser detection is currently only available for English language submissions."

How the bypasser timeline developed

Turnitin did not launch bypasser detection all at once. The feature has grown in visible stages.

In December 2023, the FAQ noted:

By August 2025, the report itself had changed to reflect this:

"With this release, the 'AI-generated only' category in the AI writing report will now include the percentage of AI-generated text that may have been modified by an AI bypasser tool."

The trajectory is clear. Detection started with basic paraphraser identification and expanded to surface bypasser-modified content as a distinct category in the report. The August 2025 update means an instructor reading the report can see not just "AI-generated" but a portion that may have been run through a bypasser after generation.

How the detector actually works

Understanding the mechanism matters more than chasing a list of named tools. Turnitin has described the process at a technical level:

"When a paper is submitted to Turnitin, sentences from the submission are extracted and segmented into overlapping sections for prediction analysis. Each segment is classified by the AI detection model and given a value between 0 and 1, denoting the probability of the text being likely human or AI-generated."

The model does not rely on the popular metrics you may have read about:

"Our model is not explicitly programmed to evaluate specific signals such as 'burstiness,' 'perplexity,' or other individual metrics sometimes referenced in public discussions."
"Instead, it learns statistical patterns from our training data."

The key signal the classifiers focus on is word probability:

"Our classifiers are trained to detect these differences in word probability and are adept at the particular word probability sequences of human writers."

This matters for anyone thinking about humanizers. The detector is not counting sentence length variation or vocabulary rarity in the way some blog posts describe. It is looking at the probability of word sequences, comparing them against patterns learned from training data. A humanizer that swaps synonyms or restructures sentences may change surface features without changing the underlying probability profile that the classifier has learned to recognize.
