Can WPS or Tencent Docs Version History Show You Wrote It?

If you draft in WPS or Tencent Docs, your writing history may be your best record of how the paper came together. Here is what each keeps, how long, what it can and cannot show, and what to do today.

The short answer

Both WPS and Tencent Docs keep version history for cloud documents. Under a WPS team notice from October 2025, WPS keeps personal users' unnamed versions for 90 days; versions you manually name are kept long-term. Tencent Docs' customer-service FAQ says revision records are stored without limit, and a document can be restored to its earliest created state. Version history is a series of snapshots, not a keystroke log. It is one piece of evidence — how much weight it carries depends on your school's process, not on the tool.

Which means version history is worth having, but it won't speak for itself. The practical move now: make sure your editing trail exists and stays accessible. Name key versions in WPS, and confirm you can open the revision panel in Tencent Docs. Details below.

WPS: what's kept, and for how long

WPS's version history is a feature of cloud documents. The official tutorials assume your file is in WPS Cloud: the setting is "Document Cloud Sync." A WPS team notice dated 20 October 2025, reposted on WPS's official community, changed the retention rules for personal users:

新规则将于2025年12月8日起正式生效。核心调整如下:命名版本:手动命名的历史版本将作为文档的重要里程碑,长期保留在您的云空间内。未命名版本:个人用户免费保留最近90天的历史版本,且不占用云空间。在新规生效前,请为需要长期保留的历史版本命名,或将其另存为副本。 (The new rules take effect on 8 December 2025. Key changes: Named versions — manually named historical versions are retained long-term in your cloud space as document milestones. Unnamed versions — personal users keep the most recent 90 days of historical versions for free, without using cloud storage. Before the new rules take effect, please name the versions you need long-term, or save them as copies.)

We couldn't open the original notice while logged out. What we read is a repost on the WPS official community. The retention period for WPS members isn't stated in this notice or any official page we found. Check your own client: open a document and see how far back the version list goes. That's what applies to your files. Where to find your version history and what it shows:

  • Cloud sync is the prerequisite. A WPS Academy tutorial (9 May 2024) says to log in and turn on "Document Cloud Sync" in Settings; once on, every save syncs to the cloud. The official pages don't describe version history for files that were never uploaded.
  • The version list is under the file-operations menu in the upper-left corner, then "History," then "Historical Versions." An official community post by "WPS办公助手" (April 2024) gives this path. Each version has a timestamp to the date and minute. You can preview, copy from, or restore any version. If multiple people edited, changes can be filtered by member.
  • The version list shows modification time, file size, and editor. An older WPS tutorial (24 April 2024) showed an export option on the then-current PC interface. The current interface may differ; WPS has not re-documented the entry point since.

Restoring a version requires edit permission. A Kingsoft Documents help-center page (22 April 2024, same account system as WPS Cloud) says only editors can restore historical versions. WPS also distinguishes "document revision" from "version history": revision tracks insertions and deletions as colored markup a reviewer accepts or rejects; version history saves the whole file as a snapshot. They solve different problems, and you might need both.

Tencent Docs: what's kept

Tencent's customer-service FAQ says:

温馨提示: 修订记录是不限次数存储的,文档最早可恢复到刚创建的状态。 (Note: Revision records are stored without limit on the number of versions, and a document can be restored to its earliest created state.)

The FAQ says the document creator can view the revision history. To open it: click "≡" in the upper-right corner, then "View Revision Records." Each collaborator gets a color, and matching blocks in the document show their edits. The FAQ says revision records can be viewed on desktop, not on mobile. Pick a version, click "Restore." The FAQ only describes exporting the current document, not individual historical versions. The official pages don't distinguish free from paid accounts for retention, so neither will we.

What version history can and can't show

Version history tells you what a document looked like at specific points in time and which account made the changes. A trail of saves across days and weeks, with visible edits between versions, shows a person was working on this document over time. Our suggestion is to treat it as one data point, not a complete defense. What it does not show:

  • It's not a keystroke log: you can see the document changed between versions, but not how sentences were composed.
  • It records what ended up in the file, not where the wording came from.
  • It proves nothing on its own; your school's process decides the weight.
  • Read-only links won't show version history. WPS requires edit permission; Tencent's FAQ says the creator can view the revision record. Our suggestion: open it from your own account when showing someone.

If you also use Word or Google Docs, the same logic applies. See how to keep version history in Word, Google Docs and Overleaf and what Google Docs version history actually records.

What to do now

The goal is to make sure your editing trail exists, is identifiable, and stays accessible for as long as you might need it.

  • If you use WPS: confirm Document Cloud Sync is on. Then name any version that marks a milestone: proposal, first draft, the revision after your supervisor's feedback, the submitted version. Unnamed versions are kept for 90 days, which means a paper drafted in September and defended in March will lose its early versions if you don't name them. The WPS team's October 2025 notice makes the same point: name what you need long-term, or save copies.
  • If you use Tencent Docs: open your document on a computer, click "≡" in the upper-right corner, select "View Revision Records." Confirm you can see your edit history and that it goes back to when you started. The mobile app doesn't support viewing revision records.
  • To document a specific older Tencent Docs version with no official export method, our suggestion is to screenshot the revision panel, or show your instructor in person. This doesn't alter the document.
  • Use your own account when showing version history.

None of this guarantees a particular outcome — no tool can promise that. What it does is make sure the evidence of your writing process is there when you need it.
